Henry (Permanent Sanctuary Resident)

Henry came to us as a tiny kitten after he was found in a wooded area in Jackson and brought to the place where I worked. A coworker’s boyfriend initially offered to foster him, but I discovered that little Henry wasn’t being fed nearly enough—and for a growing kitten, that was a problem. So Henry came home with me.

Around the same time, another orange tabby kitten named Parker had been found in Nashville. The two boys were placed together and grew up as companions. Parker was eventually adopted, while Henry remained with us and became part of the family and home he has known ever since.

And Henry grew.

And grew.

And grew.

That tiny kitten from the woods is now a very large orange boy with an equally tender heart.

Henry is extremely shy and cautious, but once he knows he is safe, he is also incredibly loving. He is a sensitive soul who likes his world to be familiar, predictable and reasonably quiet. He is deathly afraid of the vacuum. Thunder is unacceptable. Loud noises are suspicious. Unfamiliar things require caution. And really, anything that walks sideways—or moves at all—may warrant immediate concern.

Fortunately, Henry has discovered one very reliable refuge from all of life’s alarming developments:

Boxes.

Henry LOVES boxes. He once became so attached to a particular box that he created a hole in the side just big enough for his head. This allowed him to remain safely tucked inside his beloved box while still keeping an eye on whatever suspicious activities might be occurring in the outside world.

Henry also has a rather contemplative side. He apparently finds the painted bird on an old clock absolutely fascinating and will sit in front of it staring for what seems like hours. Whether he’s waiting patiently for the bird to finally do something or simply appreciating the artwork, Henry isn’t saying.

For all his funny quirks, Henry is an exceptionally sweet boy. He has spent nearly his entire life surrounded by the home, people and cats he knows. For a sensitive kitty like Henry, that familiarity means security—and over the years, this little family has become his world.

Henry isn’t waiting for another home. He is home.

As a permanent sanctuary resident, Henry will always have the familiar friends, quiet places, reassurance, love, boxes—and apparently bird-themed artwork—he needs to feel safe and happy.
